Dukeries [Notts] Gundog Club
Open
Field Trial - Over Whitacre, Warwickshire - 20th January 2011
By Kind Permission Of
Mr S Chetwynd & Mr L Wilks
Judges: Mr J Naylor & Mr E Kania
The weather was very
cold around -3°, dry and bright, overnight there had been a very hard frost,
bright sunshine in the morning with very light wind, warming up a little in
the afternoon. The wind was very light all day. Scenting conditions
appeared to be quite good all day.
The ground consisted
of deep wooded gullies with some set aside and some woodland with heavy
bramble bottom, given the wind and terrain dogs needed to take care and work
their beat thoroughly. January driven Pheasants proved to be a
difficult and challenging quarry.
Awards
2nd Mr
S. R. C. Major’s Tournesol Destinee at Bryantscroft Brittany Bitch.
Working a wide deep wooded gully with a stream running in the bottom on a
back wind she soon located and pointed staunchly a hen Pheasant which
unfortunately flew into ground we could not shoot over. Working on along the
gully methodically covering her beat the rest of her run was blank. Starting
her second run with a back wind in woodland with heavy bramble cover she
worked to the edge, and then following the edge of the wood a cock pheasant
flushed she was steady, to the flush. The cock was shot falling in a stubble
field. The retrieve was completed efficiently and tenderly to hand.
Brought back into the wood to make good her ground she came on staunch point
on a bramble patch, producing a hen Pheasant on command steady to flush and
shot the bird was shot to falling at some considerable distance in ground we
were to work later. Still on point on the bramble she produced a Cock
Pheasant on command again steady to flush shot and fall she was taken to the
edge of a maize field to complete the retrieve which she did, tenderly to
hand. This completed her second run. Her Water retrieve was completed
quickly and efficiently.

4th Mr
M. Canham’s Stubblemere Black Majic
Working a wide deep wooded gully with white grass on a cheek wind, working
quickly he covered his ground with determination, he pointed and indicated
a number of times before drawing onto a staunch point, guns were
positioned, producing on command a cock bird which was shot falling in
front. The bird was retrieved tenderly to hand on command. His second run
again in a gully, he indicated scent, however it would appear that the bird
was running forward, as the dog followed at pace for some distance, not able
to establish contact and missing ground as he attempted to do so. His second
run was blank. He completed the water retrieve with enthusiasm.

I’d like to thank the
Dukeries Gundog Club for their kind invitation to judge this Open Stake, Mr
Steve Chetwynd and Mr Larry Wilkes, for hosting the trial on this
challenging ground that offers both handlers and dogs the opportunity to
demonstrate their skills. I would also thank the rest of the team without
whom a trial would not be possible, our - Guns Chris, Paul and Larry who
shot accurately and with care all day, picking up dog and the blanking in
team, our Red Flag and the Chief Steward Di Arrowsmith who managed to keep
us in order all day. Finally I would like to thank both my co judge Mr
John Naylor for sharing his experience with me and the competitors for being
so sporting.
